Ministerial: This is the first measure to address prison understaffing

The first of a series of measures to address the issue of prison overcrowding was implemented yesterday by decision of the Council of Ministers, according to an official announcement.

During yesterday's session of the Cabinet, and following a recommendation by the Minister of Justice and Public Order to the Ministry of Finance, it was decided to exempt prison guards from the requirement of passing government exams during their recruitment process.

According to the decision, candidates for recruitment prison guards will now sit for special exams.

Exemption from government exams was a standing demand of prison guards and was raised, among other demands, in the recent meeting of the Minister of Justice, Anna Koukkidis Prokopiou, with a delegation of the Personnel branch PASYDY prisons.

With the satisfaction of the request, it is expected that the process of hiring prison guards will be facilitated and the problem of staffing will be solved by covering service needs in the prisons.
