Next Previous • Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Shipping a regular blood donor of the Cypriot economy
Despite all the challenges facing the shipping sector, due to the pandemic, but also the various war crises, it remains consistently one of the largest blood donors of the Cypriot economy and arguably one of the largest employers, said the Minister of Education, Culture, Of Sports and Youth, Prodromos Prodromou, in his greeting at today's Award Ceremony for the Competition “The Comparative Advantages of Cypriot Shipping in Relation to Competition – We Sail the Flag”.
“Our goal is to open the horizons of the sea and the professional studies and opportunities for our young people. “It is a happy circumstance that now, thanks to the right initiative of this government, our country has a Ministry of Shipping that methodically opens the prospects of the Blue Economy for Cyprus”, noted.
Mr. Prodromou congratulated all the children and teachers who participated in this competition.
“It is no coincidence that the competition was addressed to the children of the Lyceums and the Technical and Vocational Schools of Education and Training of Limassol, since Limassol is one of the largest ship management centers in the world. There are more than 100 ship management companies, as well as a variety of companies in the wider shipping sector. “Today, about 9,000 workers are employed in the shipping industry, the majority of whom are from Cyprus,” he added.
As he said, the development of the Blue Economy is one of the priorities of the European Commission precisely because it offers the opportunity to create new jobs, providing a way out for economic recovery.
“The knowledge and skills of the human resources employed in sectors that fall under the Blue Economy are one of the driving forces of the economy of the countries that have access to the sea. When for the whole of Europe the Blue Economy emerges as one of the most promising horizons, think how much more this is true for an island country like ours. When countries that are only on one side or even in a corner still from the sea and make so much effort to open up to the sea and take advantage of the maritime economy, think how much more this is true for an island country like Cyprus, especially in the historical “The focus of seafaring is the Mediterranean,” he said.
As Mr. Prodromou said, Cyprus can become a model in this area, as there is no doubt that the sea is an important source of wealth connected with the history of our island.
“For this reason, coordinated efforts are being made in this direction and initiatives are being taken that favor the development of skills and the creation of jobs related to the Blue Career,” he noted.
The Minister of Education stressed the importance of of strategic importance, was the decision of this government, during the Presidency of Nikos Anastasiadis, for the creation of the Ministry of Shipping.
“On the occasion of his presence here with us, I would like to thank again for our cooperation our colleague, Deputy Minister of Shipping Vassilis Dimitriadis, but also to emphasize that in a relatively short period of time we have seen great and important results from the operation of a Ministry “Shipping, which put on a new basis, in a more structured and methodical effort, our policy for the sea, shipping, the Blue Economy”, he said.
Mr. Prodromou stated, in addition, that one of the goals of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, and more specifically of the Directorate of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training, is to contribute substantially in this direction, offering study programs related to with shipping, both at the level of secondary education, with the offer of the Department of Maritime Professions at the Technical School of Limassol, and at the level of higher vocational education and training, with the offer of the program “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies” at the Public School MIEEK in Limassol.
“It is worth noting that, in the context of this effort, good cooperation has been developed with the Ministry of Shipping, especially regarding the development of the relevant curricula. With & nbsp; “I can not but emphasize how important the curriculum is that gives you the opportunity to open up professionally in the promising area of the sea”, he added.
Addressing the children, Mr. Prodromou said that this competition can be the trigger for them to proceed to studies related to the shipping sector.
He noted that the Program “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies” »Of the MIEEK Public School offers them the opportunity of free two-year study in their city.
As he said, shipping is an industry that is distinguished for its professionalism, its continuous development, the good and so interesting professional climate, but also the high earnings that it offers.
“It is an industry for which we can all feel proud of our Cyprus since, despite the global competition, it manages to make our flag fly in all the seas of the world.
