Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Turkey's obstinacy is an obstacle to the resolution of the Cyprus issue

Turkey's obsession and its expansionist ambitions are unfortunately a roadblock for the effort to resolve the Cyprus issue, but also for maintaining security, peace and stability in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, stressed the Minister of Defense Michalis Giorgallas.

In a memorial speech on behalf of the Government at the annual church memorial of the hero of the liberation struggle of EOKA 1955-59, Evagoras Pallikaridis, held on Sunday at the Cathedral of Agios Theodoros in Paphos, Mr. Giorgallas noted that "the acceptance and maintaining the dangerous status quo, as a result of the Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation, worsens what has already been done and causes new ones. This has the "result of making it even more difficult to resolve the Cyprus issue on the basis of the agreed framework and the relevant UN resolutions", he added.

Continuing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that "our irreversible efforts aim in achieving a solution without occupation troops, foreign guarantees and interventionist rights that will restore the unity of our country, its territory and its people as well as the institutions of the State».

A solution, he noted, "which will make our homeland a reunited, free and modern European state, which will be a common homeland of prosperity and security for all its legal citizens without discrimination and exceptions". In this direction, we must, as Mr. Giorgallas said, do everything possible, with the active involvement of the European Union and the international factor, in order to break the deadlock and create the conditions for the resumption of the dialogue.

Referring to the statement of the President of the Republic that the more active involvement of the EU will be a decisive factor for lifting the deadlock and restarting the talks, he emphasized that “a necessary condition is the demonstration of the required will on the part of the other side, which must respond to the its obligations towards the Republic of Cyprus, respecting international law, EU principles and values.

Referring to Evagoras Pallikaridis, Mr. Giorgallas emphasized that his insurmountable passion, his unparalleled strength, but also his direct poetic speech, have been chanting for decades now like a hymn to the eternal beloved of humanity, Liberty, noting that in his person the entire meaning of the national liberation struggle of EOKA together with the valuable contribution of the Cypriot apprentice youth.

Addressing the relatives of the hero but also all Cypriots, the Minister of Defense said that the figure and especially the sacrifice of the hero Evagoras Pallikaridis is for all of us today, a compass and a bright beacon.

The religious memorial service was preceded by a flame transfer from the point of arrest of Evagoras Pallikaridis in Lysos, to his home in Tsada and from there to the hero's monument in Paphos. The flame was carried by runners of the All-Cypriot Association of Reserve Commandos and runners of the Periklis Dimitrios Association, while a trisasio and laying of wreaths at the hero's monument followed. The event, which was attended by a large number of people, included songs from the children's choir "Camerton" under the direction of Maestro Anna Izmailova and greetings from the president of the Cultural Association Evagoras Pallikaridis and from the Chief of the EEAF, Lieutenant General Dimokritos Zervakis.
