More than 7 thousand deaths with the main cause of cardiovascular diseases were recorded in Cyprus in 2021, with the main cause of cardiovascular diseases, according to data published by the Health Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health.

During a Workshop, organized yesterday by the Ministry of Health, on the effective management of cardiovascular diseases, it was reported that cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death worldwide, with more than 17 million deaths per year, and the number one threat for the public health of each country.

Figures from the Health Monitoring Unit were cited for Cyprus, which indicate a total of 7,326 deaths in 2021, with cardiovascular diseases as the main cause.

In addition, it was reported that 6.5% of the population, aged 18 and over, suffers from ischemic heart diseases and 6.9% from arterial diseases.

Besides, as was emphasized during the Workshop, « significantly high rates» are listed among the risk factors that predispose to the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as diabetes with a rate of 12.5%, arterial hypertension with a rate of 29.5% and hyperlipidemia with a rate of 28.2%.

« Immediate intervention is imperative otherwise these numbers will jump to even greater numbers, warns the competent Ministry, which in its announcement states that in the light of the data in question, it has prioritized this important issue and decided to develop the National Strategy for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases.

The Workshop was attended by all the involved institutions and services, scientific companies, health professionals and patient representatives, who submitted opinions and suggestions on the issue of the effective management of cardiovascular diseases .
