Neapolis Paphos University Honors Katherine E. Fleming with Honorary Doctorate

With particular pleasure and honor, Neapolis Paphos University held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, the induction ceremony of Katherine E. Fleming, distinguished academic and President of the J. Paul Getty Trust, to an Honorary Doctorate of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

The ceremony took place in the “Kyrenia” auditorium of the University in the presence of the University's Board of Directors and academic community, representatives of Paphos authorities and institutions, the US Embassy and friends of the University.

Mr. Giorgos M. Leptos, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Neapolis Paphos University, in his greeting, underlined the importance of Prof. K. Fleming's inclusion in the academic community of Neapolis University, citing “our lifelong commitment to excellence and innovation knowledge is fully reflected in the work and personality of Prof. K. Fleming. Her presence will further strengthen the ability and will of our Institution to emerge as a center of Higher Education excellence in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

 The Rector of the University, Prof. Pantelis Sklias, emphasized the value of Prof. K. Fleming's contribution in the field of humanities, history and academic leadership, noting  “Prof. K. Fleming's contribution to the study of history and in the promotion of education is outstanding and deserves every recognition. As President of the Getty Trust, he has demonstrated leadership in preserving the cultural wealth of Hellenism   and in supporting research and education at an international level”.

At the end of the ceremony, Prof.  K. After expressing her thanks for joining the academic community of Neapolis Paphos University, Fleming gave an inspiring speech entitled “Making the Past Present”, referring to how the past shapes the destinies of people and nations, and how the ancient Greek heritage can be a  source of strength for the progress of Greece and Cyprus.

Professor  K. Fleming holds the “Alexander Onassis” Chair in History and Greek Culture at New York University and has served as Chancellor Emeritus of the University. Her academic career includes significant achievements, such as her book “Greece – A Jewish History”, which has received multiple honors. Her contribution to Greek culture was also recognized by the Hellenic Republic, which honored her with the award of Greek citizenship in 2015.

The Neapolis Paphos University, with the inclusion of Prof.  K. Fleming in its academic community, confirms its role as a center of excellence in Higher Education, promoting knowledge and research at an international level.
