Police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki confirmed that all four passengers were Chinese nationals, three men and one woman, while the pilot was Nepalese.

Residents saw fire rising from the forest and alerted the authorities, he said.

The helicopter, which was heading to Rasuwa district from Kathmandu, lost contact with the control tower three minutes after take off in the early afternoon, Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.

More than 360 people have been killed in plane or helicopter crashes in Nepal in the past 24 years.

Wedged between India and China, Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks, and its planes often serve small airports nestled in isolated hills or near cloud-shrouded peaks.
