Statement by the Minister of Health:
The gradual deterioration of epidemiological indicators recorded in recent days in Cyprus is in line with the corresponding picture observed in the rest of Europe and is attributed to a combination of factors such as the resumption of professional, social and sporting activities after de-escalation of restrictive measures, non-meticulous compliance of health protocols and the rapid spread of the (Indian) “Delta” mutation.
The Epidemiological Surveillance Unit together with the Scientific Advisory Committee are monitoring the data and are in constant contact with the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), which notes that by the end of August the “Delta” mutation will make up 90% of young people. cases in Europe.
The hospitals of OKYPY remain vigilant to deal with the increased cases that need hospitalization, which in the vast majority (in a percentage that exceeds 90%) have not been vaccinated. A source of concern is the fact that in recent days there has been an increase in the hospitalization of young people, who develop serious symptoms and need special treatment.
I urge everyone, especially young people, to use the vaccine, the only weapon we have to fight the virus, to protect their health and ensure the health of their loved ones. The Vaccination Portal remains open with enough vaccines available to help strengthen the immune wall that will protect us most effectively against the virus. I also call once again on all citizens to abide by health protocols and to be especially careful.
The Ministry of Health will intensify the information campaign for citizens, especially young people, about the benefits of vaccination, while similar efforts are made with organized groups, student and other Non-Governmental Organizations.
Earlier today, I met with Mr. Michalis Hadjipandelas, in view of his impending assumption as Minister of Health, and briefed him in detail on the epidemiological situation. Mr. Hadjipandelas had a first contact with the Administration of the Ministry, while in the following days other preparatory meetings will follow, until the assumption of his duties, on the 1st of July.
