The autonomy of the Fire Service is estimated to be completed within the next month with the appointment of the Chief of Staff, who will take over the administration of the Fire Brigade and will be accountable only to the respective Minister of Justice. As the Minister of Justice, Mr. Stefi Drakou, stated to “P”, the Fire Service was dependent on the Police in several areas and in order to ensure its smooth operation, after its independence from the Police and its autonomy, it takes time for them to become all the necessary actions for this and the transition to autonomy to be done smoothly. “The plan is for the autonomy of the Fire Service to be completed within September,” said Ms. Drakou. Pointing out, at the same time, to “P” that the position of the chief is a promotion position, which will be paid by its own decision after the establishment of a three-member committee consisting of the director general of the Ministry of Justice as chairman, an assistant police chief Appointed by Ms. Drakou after consultation with the Chief of Police and a Prosecutor of the Republic who will also be appointed by the Minister after consultation with the Attorney General.
It should be noted that the procedures for the autonomy of the Fire Service have been underway since last May when the plenary session of the Parliament voted, after years of discussions, the new legal framework that will govern the operation of the Fire Service, the Fire Service Law of 2021.
