The Cyprus Addictions Authority (AAEK) is very pleased to announce the signing of a new memorandum of cooperation with the International Water Research Center Nirea of the University of Cyprus.

The new research project ALTO aims to study the use of alcohol and tobacco products, through the monitoring of specific indicators and their metabolites in municipal wastewater. The memorandum of cooperation signed yesterday by the president of AAEK Dr. Christos Minas and the Head of the Research and Innovation Support Service of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Marios Dimitriadis, aims at the systematic measurement and calculation of alcohol and tobacco consumption in the areas of Nicosia and Ayia Napa-Paralimni and will last one year.

At the same time, AAEK fully finances for the third consecutive year the research DETECTION program, within which drug consumption is monitored in the areas of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa-Paralimni.

Wastewater epidemiology, as the methodology is called which is adopted for the preparation of such studies, is based on the fact that the chemical substances consumed by man end up either as such or chemically modified, in the urban sewage and are taken to the sewage treatment plants of each region. Therefore, by studying their composition and using appropriate algorithms, the levels of use of the above substances can be calculated.

The scientific findings of this study are a valuable tool for drawing up policies in the field of substance addiction.
