New EU regulations will be uniform for all European airlines

Changes to the rules that apply to airlinesregarding the dimensions and kilograms of luggage allowed in the cabin of an aircraft for each air journey, as well as the amount of liquids they can carry, come into force from today, September 1, from European Union.

The new EU regulations will be uniform for all European airlines, meaning passengers can now expect standardized baggage sizes and weights. p>

    What changes for hand luggage

In relation to hand luggage, those that will apply from September 1st are:

Permitted weight: Each piece of hand luggage should not exceed 10 kg.

Permitted number: 1 piece of hand luggage and 1 small personal item such as a purse, backpack or laptop bag that should fit under the seat in front of you.

Maximum dimensions: Maximum dimensions (including handles and wheels) are set at 55 x 40 x 20 cm, while the personal item must be 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

    What will apply with liquids

The Commission reinstates the previous rules regarding the amount of liquids that passengers can carry in their hand luggage.

Until now, travelers passing through airports equipped with explosive detection systems for carry-on baggage (EDSCB) could carry liquids in quantities greater than 100 ml.

This exemption is removed until all airports in Europe have the same Explosive Screening Devices (EDSCB).

In particular, the Commission's general cabin baggage regulations provide that:

Liquids carried in hand luggage, such as aerosols, drinks, toothpastes, cosmetic creams or gels, must be placed in transparent plastic bags with a maximum capacity of 1 liter, and no single package must exceed 100 ml. Liquid packages with a capacity of more than 100 ml must be placed in checked baggage. Quantitative restrictions do not apply to medicines and baby food.

Liquids purchased at any airport or airline duty free may be carried in carry-on luggage, provided both they and their receipt are placed in a sealed security bag (with a red border) that the traveler receives at the time of purchase. Until reaching the final destination, the passenger cannot open the security bag. However, security officers may need to open the bag or bottles for inspection. If this happens and the passenger has a connecting flight at another airport, they must inform the security officer so that the liquids can be put back into a new security bag.

    Sharps and Explosives

Any sharp objects that could be used as weapons are not allowed in the aircraft cabin. Such items, which are often of everyday use, such as corkscrews and scissors, must be placed in checked baggage.

Explosive and flammable materials – e.g. fireworks, aerosol spray paint or other flammable and toxic substances such as acids – are prohibited on flights. Such materials may not be carried either in carry-on or checked baggage.

Carrying any type of weapon into the aircraft cabin is prohibited.
