The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the One China Policy, and supports peace and security in the Taiwan Strait , the Press Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Gotsis, said to KYPE.

In response to a question from the Cyprus News Agency, he said that “in relation to the vote held in Taiwan on January 12, we wish to reiterate that the Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the One China Policy, and supports peace and security in the Taiwan Strait”.

It is recalled that a vote was held in Taiwan on January 12, however, Beijing maintained that reunification is “inevitable”. According to the One China principle, there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is a part of China, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate Government representing the whole country. Beijing regards any Taiwan independence as a separatist move and believes that it will eventually achieve full reunification and both sides of the Taiwan Strait will be reunited.

From Brussels, the European Union “continued” with a statement “all the voters who participated in’ this democratic exercise”.

“The EU remains concerned about the growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and opposes any unilateral initiative aimed at modifying the status quo,” the statement by the representative of the head of the of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

“The EU underlines that peace and stability in the strait are essential for security and prosperity in the region and the world”.

From the side , US President Joe Biden said the US “does not support” Taiwan's independence, while the Russian Foreign Ministry said it continues to regard Taiwan as an integral part of China.
