Nikos Nouris: Citizens will soon enjoy the benefits of a new form of local government

Citizens will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits and benefits of a new form of local government, said today the Minister of Interior Nikos Nouris, adding that “time does not go back”.

In his statements after the solemnity of the day in the doxology for the anniversary of the historic “NO” held at the Cathedral of the Apostle Barnabas in Nicosia, Mr. Nouris said that “soon we will have the opportunity for everyone and especially the citizens to enjoy the fruits and benefits of a new form of local government that will put into practice what we have been saying for so many years that citizens should enjoy the highest quality services at the lowest possible cost “.

Asked if we are closer to completing the dialogue on local government reform, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “the conditions are extremely mature, starting with the parliamentary parties which are very consistently in favor of the reform effort and of course any issues remain we will resolve at the level of Parliament “.

Asked about yesterday's postponement of the discussion of the issue of immigration in the Council of Ministers, Mr. Nouris stressed that “there is a very clear orientation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs” on the issue which is “extremely serious”. He explained that due to the busy agenda of the Council of Ministers yesterday, he considered that “it was not offered for an extensive discussion on this issue and will most likely return next week.”

Asked if other measures will be discussed, Mr. Nouris said that “too many measures are being discussed because the problem is neither fragmentary nor, of course, temporary.”

He assessed that “there should be a balance in the way of managing the immigration and this is the intention of the Ministry of Interior to present before the Council of Ministers” a holistic approach to the issue. He explained that “we are dealing with all the specific issues that concern many Ministries involved, therefore it takes time and this time will be given to have consultations with the co-responsible Ministers and to bring it before the Council of Ministers”.
