No problems are expected in terms of electricity supply in the coming days according to the Press Representative of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSMO) Hara Koussiappa, assuming that there will be no damage to a conventional production unit. In the event that this happens, according to her, the coverage of demand will be marginal.

In her statements to KYPE, Ms. Kousiappa said that the maximum demand today 14/8/2024 at 15:30 in the afternoon is expected to be around 1050MW while during the afternoon peak hours, i.e. between the hours of 18:00-22:00: 00 in which generation adequacy depends almost entirely on conventional units, demand is expected to be around 900-920MW.

Tomorrow, August 15th, peak demand is expected to rise to 940MW and as predicted , will be increased compared to last year, which was at 865 MW on the same day, while during the evening peak tomorrow, demand is expected to range between 850-880MW, he noted.

“Under normal conditions, there is not expected to be a problem of sufficiency except in the event of a failure of a production unit, in which case the coverage of demand will be marginal,” he said.

He also noted that the maximum production capacity from conventional units over the next few days, tomorrow, August 15th and Friday, August 16th is predicted at 995MW.

He also explained that the prolonged high temperatures during this summer keep the demand at higher than expected levels for the season.

Questioned about the damage that has occurred in the last period of time, the Spokesperson of the DSMC noted that there were indeed damage in the production units of the EAC in the last period.

She added that as this at the moment there are EAC production units in emergency maintenance of a few days, which means that in combination with the continuous high temperatures, the operational margin is limited in case of another unit failure.
