The 48-hour strike of public doctors is underway, resulting in the closure of public hospitals nationwide. Surgeries, treatments and appointments have been postponed and Their reprogramming is expected, a responsibility that falls on OKYpY.

In his statements, the President of PASYKI, Sotiris Koumas, said that today the unions, the doctors, have been forced to implement what they have been warning about for months and reminded that something like this has been happening for several years. “Doctors do not intend to strike. What has been happening in recent years is not the best and what we dream of. The model is suffering and the state refuses to control this model and now we hear about financial problems”, Mr. Koumas pointed out, while wondering, “who is responsible?”.

In addition, he noted that doctors work and must be paid. The strike was not our intention, but they have forced us. From there, he stated that, because they are doctors, arrangements were made so that there would not be many problems with the patients, while indicating that they are the doctors who care about the patients.

Furthermore, when asked if there was a possibility of additional strike measures, he said that “when you start with 48 hours, all possibilities exist,” while noting that the issue is not the money and salaries of doctors, but the survival of public hospitals.

In addition, as stated by the doctors, if there was a will, there would be a way to resolve it and they add that, “it is obvious that those who participated in this dialogue are artfully trying to shift the responsibilities to the doctors, who postponed previous strikes”.

They also reiterated that the strike was not an end in itself, but as they emphasized, they were forced to proceed with the strike measures.

However, with the strike in progress, the major concern now is the management of patients in the Accident and Emergency Departments, since they will essentially operate with security personnel and will examine patients in critical condition at the Nicosia General Hospital and the Limassol General Hospital, who require immediate assessment and rescue interventions, while ESI-2 and ESI-3 category cases will be transported by the ambulance service to the emergency departments of private hospitals in the province by the Ambulance Service, under the responsibility and coordination of the Ministry of Health.

Earlier, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Christina Giannaki, stated that the coordination of all efforts will be carried out by the business office at the Ministry of Health, so that there is a better coordination effort.
