The Office of the Environment Commissioner has received numerous complaints over the last year regarding the beaches of Faros and Ammos of the Community of Pervolia and now of the Municipality of Dromolaxia- Meneu, in the Province of Larnaca, reports an announcement.
In summary, the complaints mainly related to the construction of three unlicensed kiosks and bars within the beach protection zone at Faros Beach, as well as one bar at Ammos Beach, noise from loud music and lighting during the evening hours and uninspected electrical installations and generators for the operation of their bars and refrigerators for the sale of beverages.
Also observed was the entry and circulation of vehicles on the beach through an access intended only for use by the disabled, ambulances and for beach cleaning purposes. It is noted that during this period turtles spawn sporadically on the adjacent beaches and there are already several cages installed by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research. on the beach for launching water scooters.
The complaints also concern the absence of a lifeguard tower and non-employment of a lifeguard at the organized Ammos beach, cleaning of the beach in the presence of bathers with mechanical means, which may also scrape the sand, movement and stacking of pebbles at the back of the beach every year for the appearance of the sandy substrate of the beach and leakage of sewage from adjacent residential complexes.
It is noted that an officer of the Environment Commissioner's Office carried out an on-site visit in collaboration with the relevant Local Authority and the Fisheries Department and then proceeded to inform all competent Services in writing regarding the above findings.
The Mayor of Dromolaxia-Menou immediately convened a meeting in which the District Administration of Larnaca and relevant Services participated, for information and taking corrective measures.
Subsequently, they were given instructions from the Prefect of Larnaca for the removal (after a warning) of the two kiosks selling drinks as well as for taking legal measures against the owners of the other two in collaboration with the EOA. At the same time, the Department of Electro-Mechanical Services proceeded to seize the electricity generators, and the Department of the Environment took charge of the issue of sewage leakage and issued the necessary warnings.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner notes that it will continue in cooperation with the competent Services to monitor the restoration of all the above problems for the good of the environment as well as for the safety and well-being of citizens.
