Occupied: Requirement of the UN Secretary General to keep equal distances

It is a condition for the impartiality of the UN Secretary General to keep equal distances, says the “presidency” of the pseudo-state for the report of Antonio Guterres on his good services, submitted to the Security Council and concerning the developments in the Cyprus issue from June 19, 2021 until December 15, 2021.

The “presidency” in the occupied territories issued a statement on the report stating that Ersin Tatar's primary goal is to find a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem and that “the unjust and unsustainable status quo created by the Greek Cypriot side of the partnership in 1963 “as it is provocatively mentioned, did not make it possible to reach an solution based on equality, as he states. Therefore, the “presidency” states, the negotiations that have been going on since 1968 failed and finally collapsed in 2017.

Tatar added that substantive negotiations could only begin and yield results based on “political equality” and “pre-existing sovereign equality rights of the parties”.

The statement added that the Turkish Cypriot side, without prejudice, has repeatedly stated that it is ready to negotiate a compromise that provides for institutional cooperation on the basis of sovereign equality and an equal international regime, as it states.

The “presidency” also notes the Secretary General's reports on the work of the technical committees, as the only channel of dialogue and steps taken to facilitate the lives of people in both communities. He also states that he supports their work without politicizing it.

It also refers to the deepening inequality between the two economies that may further alienate the parties. According to the “presidency”, it is clear that one of the main reasons for this inequality “is the inhuman and outdated isolation and restrictions on the Turkish Cypriot people, which are also mentioned in the relevant UN reports.”

He also states that the Turkish Cypriot side does not believe that the opening of Varosia is contrary to the relevant resolutions of the SA. Regarding the Secretary General's remarks on natural resources, the “presidency” claims that the recipient of these calls is the Greek Cypriot side, which is responsible for the tension, as it states, with Greece as its supporter.

The “presidency” criticizes the references to the Republic of Cyprus and the Government of Cyprus, stating that these institutions “are occupied by the Greek Cypriot side, do not represent the Turkish Cypriot people and the whole of Cyprus.”

He also states that the Secretary General did not include in his last two reports the fact that the peace process in Cyprus is “sui generis” and that Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have equal rights, which is included in the report of his good services.

He called the report an “unfortunate step backwards” and did not help “provide the necessary equivalence for a sustainable reconciliation”.

The “presidency” finally states that its more detailed views on the reports will be forwarded to the UN Secretary-General and the views on the decision to be taken by the Security Council will be communicated after its adoption.
