53% of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in Cyprus & nbsp; said in response to a survey by the European Union & nbsp; Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) & nbsp; that they had intentionally or accidentally bought at least one imitation product online during the & nbsp; previous 26% said they deliberately bought imitation products.

The percentage for Cyprus is close to the EU average, where 52% of Europeans of the same age group said they bought imitation during the same period. 33% said they had access to pirated digital content.

At EU level, of those who deliberately proceeded with this action, 37% bought a counterfeit product (14% in 2019), with the highest percentage recorded in Greece (60%) and the lowest in the Czech Republic (24%). & Nbsp ;

21% played, downloaded or watched pirated digital content.

However, the same survey shows that 58% of young people in Cyprus say they prefer to access digital content from legitimate sources. The corresponding rate in the EU was 60%, having increased compared to 2019 when it was at 50%

The main factors according to the survey are price and availability, while the importance of peer influence is increasing and social influence.

The main deterrents, on the other hand, are cyber threats, cyber fraud and environmental impacts.

In terms of imitation products that young people deliberately buy, the most popular were clothing and accessories (17%), followed by & nbsp; shoes (14%), electronics (13%) and toiletries, & nbsp; cosmetics, personal care products and perfumes (12%).

With regard to digital content, it is recorded that access through legal sources is increasing. 60% said they had not used, played, & nbsp; downloaded or watched content from illegal sources & nbsp; in the last 12 months. By comparison, the corresponding figure in 2019 was 51% and in 2016 it was 40%.

Intentional digital piracy remains stable as 21% of consumers between the ages of 15 and 24 admit that they knowingly acquired it access to & nbsp; such content in the last 12 & nbsp; months.

Also reportedly the main type of pirated content was movies (61%) & (36%).

EUIPO Executive Director Christian Arsabo said in a statement that the growing trends in the intentional and unintentional imitation market are worrying, adding that piracy is not receding even if Consumers' preference for content from legal sources increases 15 – 24.
