For the decision of the Council of Ministers to appoint Stella Michailidou as the new Superintendent of State Aid Control, the members of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs will be invited today. The discussion will be held in the presence of Finance Minister Konstantinos Petridis. Ms. Michailidou will replace Theofanis Theofanous, whose term expires next March.
According to the law on the Control of State Aid, the term of office of each registrar is 6 years, with the prospect of renewal for another six years, ie the maximum is two terms. Article 8 of the law stipulates that the Council of Ministers, after consulting the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, appoints a person of high professional and moral level, with a broad knowledge of the economic and structural conditions of the Cypriot economy, as State Audit Officer. who in this capacity is responsible for the faithful and effective application of the provisions of the law. It is concluded that the government is obliged to consult today with the committee for the selection of Ms. Michailidou, but the final decision belongs, according to government sources, to the Ministry.
Some opposition parties do not welcome the non-renewal of Mr. Theofanous's appointment. They attribute it to the objections that Mr. Theofanous had brought from time to time for decisions or intentions of the government. Among other things, Mr. Theofanous had disagreed on issues related to Cooperation, the Home Plan and tariffs for the purchase of electricity from renewable energy systems.
