Ozersay - Spehar conversation on the Cyprus issue

The Cyprus issue and the informal five-party conference were discussed yesterday in a teleconference with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, and the President of the People's Party, Kudret Ozersay.

The meeting also evaluated the UN Security Council resolutions taken in the recent period as well as the relevant actions of the UN Secretary General.

According to the GTP, Mr. Ozersay stated, after the conversation with Ms. Spehar, that to say that the only way to a solution to the Cyprus problem is the federation or to say that the only way to a solution is the two separate states , can not lead anywhere.

“With new and constructive proposals, a way out can be found in the Cyprus issue and this is the 'third way', not two states, but a non-federation cooperative based on equality. This should be the point of reference and then time and conditions will show how this cooperative will be formed. “This, at the end of the day, will mean again that the two peoples, of their own free will, will be able to decide by holding separate referendums that will take place from time to time.”

Mr. Ozersay added that he explained to Ms. Spehar that the priority for him, but also for his party, is to ensure the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot “people”, but also to achieve a fair and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem. She added that she was told that it is for what there is a need for new and constructive ideas and proposals.

“To insist that a solution must be reached by force on the basis of a federation or by a two-state solution does not lead us anywhere, but condemns us to continue the status quo. “For this reason, a co-operative based on substance in two states is the way out and is the third way,” said Kudret Ozersay, describing this model as suitable under the conditions prevailing in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.

It should be noted that Ms. Spehar also had a conversation yesterday with the president of RTK, Tufan Erhiurman.
