Tomorrow, Tuesday, many of the critical issues discussed within the Labor Advisory Board may not be expected to close, but it is a given that other equally important ones will be opened. Specifically, as we are informed, at tomorrow's meeting of the Labor Advisory Body, the Minister of Labor Zeta Aimilianidou has already informed its members -unions and employers' organizations- that they will present before them the bill prepared for harmonization of the country with a relevant Directive parental leave, which currently exists, however, is unpaid. If the bill is discussed between the social partners, it is expected to be presented before the Council of Ministers and then before the Parliament before the summer, since Cyprus will have to harmonize with the relevant Directive for reconciling work and family life by August. & Nbsp;
As we wrote again, the relevant Directive provides, among other things, a paid leave of two months for working parents with children up to eight years, paid paternity allowance that already exists in our country and a number of other facilities for young couples, such as option for flexible employment for a certain period , but also ensuring the right to be absent from work for reasons of force majeure or for the care of another family member. Parental leave will apply to all employees, ie the private sector and the public sector, and can be obtained until the child is eight years old, at intervals, with a maximum number of weeks each year. All employees will be entitled to four months of parental leave, of which two months, according to the Directive to be adopted, must either be paid or paid for them.

In her previous interventions on the issue, the Minister of Labor had stated before the Parliament that in the first phase the paid parental leave will cover a period of one and a half months, while until the summer of 2024 it will increase to two months. The institution of parental leave still exists today in Cyprus and specifically since 2002, however, it is not popular at all and this leave is not exercised to a large extent as it is unpaid. & Nbsp;
Under current law, every employed parent, male or female, is entitled to unpaid parental leave for up to eighteen (18) weeks for each child. Parental leave today can be taken for a minimum of one (1) week and a maximum of five (5) weeks, per calendar year, in the case of one or two children, or seven (7) weeks for three or more children. & Nbsp;
As mentioned for the adoption of the European directive, the Ministry of Labor has prepared a bill “on Leave (Paternity, Parenting, Care, Force Majeure) and Flexible Work Arrangements for the Balance between Work and Private Life (harmonizing law) 2022 »which is expected to be discussed along with a number of other issues such as the effort to establish a minimum wage in the Labor Advisory Body tomorrow morning in the meeting room of the Ministry of Finance. Among them is the effort to legislate telework in the private sector, but also the establishment of a legal framework for the operation of the Public Employment Service.
