The information that the church of Panagia Kanakaria, located in the occupied village of Lythrangomi, is in danger, was broadcast today by the Turkish Cypriot press.
According to the Press and Information Office, the  “Kipris” writes that “the church of Panagia Kanakaria”, located in the occupied village of Lythrangomi, is in danger from indifference, but also from possible smugglers of historical works. It is the “oldest church in Cyprus”, as the newspaper calls it.
“The mosaics in the apse section date between 525-550 – unfortunately, some of them were stolen. Since most of the stolen pieces were marketed abroad, very few of them have survived to this day. Also, the church's historic bell was recently stolen,” the report states.
