A meeting with the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, is requested by the parents of transplanted children and children with serious kidney diseases, on the occasion of the developments at Makarios Hospital and the availability of doctors at the hospital.

In the relevant letter the parents express their disagreement and strong protest regarding the recommendation of the Minister of Health, to make available the only Pediatric Nephrologist of the hospital, which was accepted by the Public Service Commission.

At the same time, they note that the lives of their children were won with many sacrifices and that “the lives of their transplants hang by a thread and under no circumstances will we allow them to be subjected to experimentation by the dangerous practices followed by the Ministry of Health by placing various doctors, who do not know the medical history of more than 10 years of our transplanted children. Our children have the inalienable right to receive the necessary specialized care from their experienced Pediatric Nephrologist, who follows them from the first days of their birth”.

As stated in detail in the parents' letter to President Anastasiades, “the removal of the Pediatric Nephrologist from Makarios Hospital, as well as our meeting with the Minister of Health, we appeal to you to arrange a meeting with you as soon as possible and if possible within of the week, as this is a very serious matter, which endangers the lives of our transplanted children”.

They also state that “as parents of children with kidney transplants and serious nephrological diseases, we strongly express our disagreement and strong protest regarding the arbitrary, illegal and abusive recommendation of the Minister of Health, without asking the Prosecutor's Office and the Police, to make available the a unique Pediatric Nephrologist and highly qualified in the management of children with kidney transplants and serious nephrological diseases, a proposal which was finally accepted by the Public Service Commission.  With the aforementioned recommendation of the Minister of Health, who did not take into account the public interest,  on which the  decision of the EDH, our transplanted children and children with serious renal diseases remain without proper medical care and medical monitoring, putting their lives in immediate danger”.

At the same time, they state that “the arrangements and solutions, which were set in motion by the Ministry of Health to cover the gap, which has been created with the availability of the above pediatric nephrologist, are temporary, emergency solutions  and which in no way can replace the specialized medical care that the transplanted children received until now from the doctor , who is the only one of his kind and has many years of extensive experience with international recognition in the monitoring of pediatric nephrological diseases , as well as in the follow-up of transplanted children”.

“Mr. President, considering the consequences that will probably arise from the deprivation of continuous guidance from the highly qualified Pediatric Nephrologist with many years of experience of our children, we invite you to understand the seriousness and criticality of the situation, and with your relevant intervention to the Minister of Health to ask for our request to immediately remove the said doctor from availability as public interest dictates. It is clear that the Ministry of Health acted dangerously, effortlessly and unnecessarily in taking an undocumented action, making available the only Pediatric Nephrologist, who for 23 years founded and operated the Pediatric Nephrology Clinic of Makarios Hospital, whose operation has been shaken, putting in endanger the lives of our children. Mr. President, the lives of our children were won with many sacrifices, the lives of their transplants hang by a thread and under no circumstances will we allow them to be subjected to experimentation by the dangerous practices followed by the Ministry of Health by placing various doctors, who do not they know the medical history of more than 10 years of our transplanted children”, states the letter.

Finally they note that “our children have the inalienable right to receive the appropriate specialized care from their experienced Pediatric Nephrologist, who he watches them from the first days of their birth”.

The parents are waiting for an answer from President Anastasiades to determine the date of the meeting.
