A fairly widespread way of mobility in many European countries, that of e-scooters, is at the gates of its mass operation in Cyprus.

According to information from “P” , the plenary session of the Parliament is expected to give the green light soon for the licensing of the use of electric skates, as it will be put to a vote before the summer holidays.

It is reminded that despite the hundreds of scooters that have been circulating on the roads for a few years and the two fatal incidents that have already occurred, the relevant bill has been under discussion since the beginning of 2021 in the Transport Committee of the Parliament. According to the bill under discussion, the proposed speed limit is set at 15km per hour, while the use of a helmet will be mandatory.

Easy to use

In his statements to “P”, Nikolas Kyriakidis, lawyer of the e-scooter company, Lime, which intends to bring thousands of electric skates in Cyprus, announced that in order to make the operation of scooters sustainable, the company has proposed to the Parliament some proposals. .

“We believe that increasing the maximum speed to 20 km and driving on the left side of any road that has a maximum speed limit of 50 km, but also removing the mandatory use of helmets for adults, will help promote electric skates,” he said. He explained that the scooters of this company will be unlocked with an application on the mobile and the payment will be made by credit cards through the application. “They will be very easy to use and will be addressed to all citizens,” he added.

Significant benefits

The official introduction of electric skates on the Cypriot roads will help in many dimensions. For example, it will reduce the traffic congestion observed in the cities and especially in the Municipality of Nicosia. It can also help reduce pollution by making the urban environment more bearable.

The issue of safety

From a Lime study in the US and covered the period between March 1, 2019 and February 28, 2020, 99.985% of all trips during this period were found to be incident-free, with riders reporting not a single injury. This means that less than 0.02% of Lime skate trips to the US resulted in a reported incident.

What applies in other countries

In all EU Member States except Croatia, Cyprus and Ireland there is a legal framework for electric skates. Specifically, the maximum speed is set between 20-25 km, while the use of adult helmets is required in Denmark, Finland, Greece and Spain. At the same time, passengers are prohibited in all Member States, except in the case of Belgium.
