A protest at the initiative of the Unia Community and with the participation of the other Communities and Municipalities of Akamas, the Youth of Polis Chrysochous and landowners of the area was organized on Saturday in Kennedy Square, Paphos.

With placards reading slogans such as “We do not negotiate the human presence in Lara and Akamas”, “Coexistence of man and environment”, “Down with Paphos and hands down with Akamas”, the locals protested for the continuing, as they reported, attempt by some parties to “misinform and distort” the provisions of the Akamas Local Plan under preparation.

At about the same time, another protest against Akamas was organized by organized groups and active citizens outside the Paphos City Hall in the presence of executives and a delegation of the Ecologists 'Movement – Citizens' Cooperation.

The President of the Community Council of Inia, Giagos Tsivikos, in his statements to the journalists stressed that their protest today is not a counter-demonstration or counter-protest of the event organized by the environmental organizations. He added that their protest had been planned for several days, after the meeting they had with the Interior and Environment Committees of the Parliament, but also the reactions of the environmental organizations, which as he stated “do not accept any development and want to remain the Akamas as it is “.

Mr. Tsivikos sent the message that “they are right on their side” and said that they will continue the fight. He called on the President of the Republic, before announcing the Local Plan, to bow down to the issue of Ineia, while he wished that the Local Plan be announced before the next presidential elections.

Stelios Kouparis on behalf of of the Community Council of Drousia demanded “equality”, adding that they want to live in the place where they were born and do not want to cement Akamas. We continued, “we are not asking to build hotels but we are asking for a development and to help farmers and stockbreeders.”

The Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Giotis Papachristofi, called on the Government to see the wider problem of Akamas and especially of Inia, who is protesting. He continued, the Local Plan must be announced, the National Forest Park must be completed and the right for gentle development must be given.

The President of the Community Council of Arodes, Matthaios Stefanou, noted that their initiative aims to reverse the declining path followed by the communities of the region for a decade and to claim the rights of residents and landowners as equal citizens of the Republic of Cyprus.

For his part, Savvas Chatziminas, President of the Akama Landowners Association, stated that “today we are united here, all the communities and we ask with this protest to deliver to the President of the Republic a memorandum with 2 , 5 thousand signatures “.

Deputies also participated in the event, with DISY's Charalambos Pazaros stating that the protest is justified and the Member of Parliament for KS. EDEK Ilias Myrianthousna says that the Government must proceed with the completion of the Akamas Local Plan and respect the positions and views of the affected communities.

The District Secretary of Panagrotikos Panikos Kaponas stated that Panagrotikos Paphos supports and understands the communities of Akamas, calling for respect for the environment and gentle development.

Paphos Governor Mary Lambrou, to be given to the Minister of Interior, Nikos Nouris and the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis. The memorandum, signed by more than 2,500 people, sets out the positions of affected landowners regarding the Akama Local Plan as well as a legal opinion on their “constitutional rights”.
