It is now a fact. In May 2024, the reform of the Local Government will be implemented, with the election of 20 mayors. The plenary session of the Parliament decided yesterday, based on the amendments of the parties that were voted, the reduction of the municipalities from 30 that number today to 20, with the Municipalities of Strovolos and Paphos remaining as they are. At the same time, the amendment of DISY was voted for the abolition of the provisions of the bill that provided for the holding of referendums for the merger of municipalities and communities, thus paving the way for the reform of Local Government. In particular, these are the following 20 municipalities:

Nicosia Province

• Municipality of Strovolos DISY's amendment for the inclusion of the Municipality of Strovolos in the new Municipality of Nicosia was rejected. Additionally, DIPA withdrew its amendment for the unification of the Municipality of Strovolos with the Municipalities of Lakatameia and Tseri and with the community settlement of Anthoupolis.
• Municipality of Latsia-Geri based in Latsia, the which consists of the Municipalities of Latsia and Geri.
• Municipality of Nicosia based in Nicosia, which consists of the Municipalities of Nicosia, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia and Engomi. The AKEL amendment for the inclusion of the Municipality of Aglantzia in the new Municipality of Latsia-Geri was rejected.
• Municipality of Lakatameia , which consists of the Municipalities of Lakatameia and Tseri, as well as the community settlement of Anthoupolis.
• Municipality of South Nicosia-Idali based in Idalion, which consists of the Municipality of Idali and the communities of Alhambra, Lympia, Nisos, Pera Chorio and Potamia.

District of Limassol

• Municipality of Limassol based in Limassol, which consists of the Municipalities of Limassol and Mesa Geitonia and the community of Circassians. The legislature was divided in two with the amendment of DIPA which provided for the creation of a municipality, which would consist of the Municipalities of Limassol, Kato Polemidia, Mesa Geitonia and Ypsonas and the communities of Ano Polemidia and Tserkeza. A total of 28 deputies voted in favor and 28 against, with the result that the amendment was rejected.
• Municipality of East Limassol with headquarters in Agios Athanasios, which consists of the Municipalities of Agios Athanasios and Germasogeia and the communities of Agios Tychonas, Akrountas, Mathikolonis, Mouttagiakas and Finikaria. With a joint amendment of DISY and AKEL, the community of Armenochori joined the new municipality.
• Municipality of Polemidia based in Polemidia, which consists of the Municipality of Kato Polemidia and the community of Ano Polemidia .
• Municipality of West Limassol based in Ypsonas, which consists of the Municipality of Ypsonas and the communities of Akrotiri, Asomatos, Episkopi, Erimi, Kantos, Kolossi, Sotiras and Trachonios. Due to the strong reactions that were provoked and the complaints of the mayor of Ypsonas for serving interests, DISY withdrew its amendment for the inclusion of the Municipality of Ypsonas and the community of Asomatos in the new Municipality of Limassol. Also, DIPA withdrew its amendment for the establishment of a new municipality, which would consist of the Municipalities of Limassol, Kato Polemidia, Mesa Geitonia and Ypsonas and the communities of Ano Polemidia and Tserkeza. Additionally, the amendment of DIPA for the creation of a new municipality was voted against, which would consist of the Municipalities of Ypsonas and Kato Polemidia and the community of Ano Polemidia.

Province of Larnaca

• Municipality of Larnaca based in Larnaca, which consists of the Municipalities of Larnaca and Livadia and the community of Voroklini. The AKEL amendment for the creation of a new municipality, which would consist of the Municipalities of Larnaca, Aradippou and Livadia and the community of Voroklini, was rejected.
• Municipality of Aradippou based in Aradippou, which consists of the Municipality of Aradippou and the communities of Kellia and Troullon.
• Municipality of Dromolaxia-Meneou based in Dromolaxia, which consists of the Municipality of Dromolaxia-Meneou, as well as the communities of Kiti, Pervolia and Tersefanos. DIPA withdrew its amendment for the creation of a new municipality that would consist of the Municipalities of Larnaca, Aradippou, Dromolaxia-Meneou and Livadia, as well as the community of Voroklini.
• Municipality of Lefkara with is based in Lefkara, which consists of the Municipality of Lefkara and the communities of Vavla, Delikipo, Kato Lefkara, Korno, Lagia and Skarinou. With amendments of DISY and AKEL, the communities of Agios Theodoros, Kato Dry and Kofinou were removed from the new Municipality of Lefkara and joined in provincial complexes. • Municipality of Athienou based in Athienou, which consists of the Municipality of Athienou and the community of Avdellero.

Paphos Province

The joint amendment DISY – DIPA for the creation of a new municipality, which would consist of the Municipality of Pegeia and the communities of Emba, Kissonerga, Lemba and Chloraka, was rejected.
• Municipality of Polis Chrysochous based in Polis Chrysochous, which consists of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and the communities of Agia Marina, Androlikou, Argaka, Gialia, Drousia, Kritou Tera, Makounta, Neo Chorio, Neon Dimaton, Pelathousa, Pomou, Tera and Chrysochous. The parties DISY – DIPA withdrew their joint amendment for the creation of a new municipality, which would consist of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and the communities of Argaka, Goudi, Kinousa, Makounta, Pelathousa and Chrysochou.

Famagusta District

• Municipality of Ayia Napa based in Ayia Napa, which consists of the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotira and the communities of Avgorou, Achna and Liopetri.
• Municipality of Paralimni & # 8211; Deryneia based in Paralimni, which consists of the Municipalities of Paralimni and Deryneia, as well as the communities of Acheritos and Frenaros. The AKEL amendment for the creation of a new municipality which would consist of the Municipality of Deryneia and the communities of Acheritos and Frenaros was rejected. A second AKEL amendment for the creation of a new municipality was also rejected, which would consist of the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotira and the communities of Avgorou, Acheritos, Achnas, Liopetri and Frenaros. Amendments voted

• In the second distribution of positions , the municipality should be considered as a constituency and the candidates should not be required to collect a certain percentage of the total number of valid votes. to the position of mayor or member of the community council.
• In the event that an official who has held the position of director, head of technical services or financial services and it is not possible to be placed in a similar position, the employee in question can be transferred to another municipality.
