Proper financial management allows us to honor what has been agreed for the increases in the salaries of civil servants, said today the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, when asked if the provision could be suspended due to the pandemic and the economic crisis.
President Anastasiadis said the government had taken generous measures to protect those affected by the pandemic. “We know for a fact that no matter how generous they are, they do not fully recover. “At the same time, there is consistency in what has been agreed, and if proper fiscal policy and management allowed us, I do not think that suspending what was agreed would contribute, especially under the current conditions that everyone is facing, to smooth operation and balance in dealing with current problems.” .
He said the agreement under which the increases were given was not recent. “It is a gradual restoration of what millions of civil servants have contributed, 2.5 billion, to the recovery and survival of the Cypriot economy,” he said.
He underlined that “the Government will continue with the same responsibility to face the problems of those who have suffered as a result of the pandemic due to the decrees of protection of the citizen's health, but at the same time will fully respect at least as much as the proper financial management allows and will allow us “the agreed” and will show sensitivity towards employees, job rescue, entrepreneurs, self-employed, vulnerable groups.
“I think we have given writing samples with what we have announced so far that we do not lack sensitivity towards those who today are experiencing a global phenomenon, first of the pandemic and second of course of the economic crisis,” he said.
