The hacking of the phones of Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles has even alarmed the EU, which now controls MEPs's mobile phones for Pegasus, a spy software sold to governments by the Israeli NSO Group.
& nbsp; Last month, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto revealed that more than 60 people associated with the Catalan separatist movement had been targeted by Pegasus, a product of the Israeli company NSO Group.
This prompted the left-wing pro-independence party of Catalonia, the ERC, a key ally of Spain's minority government, to say it would not support it until Madrid took steps to restore its confidence.
The Spanish government also announced a few days after it had spotted Pegasus spyware on the mobile phones of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles.
