The PEO announcement
A meeting to discuss the Strategic Employment of Workers from third countries is considered by PEO to be immediately convened by the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, noting at the same time in relation to pressure from employers' associations for further relaxations in the employment criteria for workers from third countries that “no new unilateral decisions”.
In an announcement by PEO it is stated that at a session of the Executive Council on Wednesday there was also an update on the work of the tripartite advisory committee on the Strategy for the Employment of Workers from third countries.
The PEO, it is noted, “responding to the call of the Minister of Labor at sessions of the Labor Advisory Body to give suggestions for a National Employment Strategy and to submit specific observations on the Strategy document as decided by the Council of Ministers of the Anastasiades government, submitted to the Ministry two documents and we expected that there would be a substantial discussion leading to the resolution of the problems created by the strategy of employing workers from third countries”.
“The discussion in the tripartite Advisory Committee ended nowhere. We expect that the government must finally take a stand,” it adds.
He asks whether the government “wants to continue the policy of granting licenses without the application of collective agreements, by abolishing the evaluation for granting approvals by tripartite advisory committees »? She also wonders if “she wants to continue to use the employment of workers from third countries as a tool to undermine and erode collective agreements and how this is consistent with her declarations to extend coverage with collective agreements”?
“We consider it necessary the Minister of Labor should immediately call a meeting to discuss the issue”, it is noted.
“Because we have been reading and hearing for the last time that employers' associations are exerting constant pressure for further relaxations in the employment criteria for workers from third countries, we warn that no new unilateral decisions will be accepted”, he concludes.
