Re-election of Emmanuel Macron in the presidency of France will allow the continuation and deepening of the Nicosia-Paris cooperation, the internationalist Petros Zarounas told KYPE.

He noted that & # 8220; at the same time the new data in Europe, as they have emerged due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, are expected to differentiate the attitude of both the EU and France itself towards Turkey & # 8221 ;.

< p class = "text-paragraph"> Mr. Zarounas said that the first meetings have already taken place with the aim of reviving the co-production program of the French-Italian anti-aircraft and anti-missile system SAMP-T in Turkey.

He added that similar moves are expected on gas issues to reduce the EU's dependence on Russian gas. It will not be a surprise to see the return of the issues on the EU-Turkey positive agenda. All this means that France in the next period will not support any policy of sanctions against Turkey & # 8221 ;, he estimated.

He also stated that & # 8220; it was possible to see it encouraging the Republic of Cyprus to contribute in a positive way and with concrete steps in this direction & # 8221 ;.

Asked about the importance of the outcome of Sunday 's elections in France for the EU & # 8211; In the light of the war in Ukraine, Mr. Zarounas pointed out that both the polls and the results of the debate show that it is difficult or easy for Emmanuel Macron to be the winner of the Sunday's election.

His victory will mean the continuation of France's foreign policy to date, he added.

He noted that in France, despite the existence of a Prime Minister, the country's foreign policy is largely determined and exercised by the President.

& # 8220; Key features of Macron's foreign policy were the emphasis and priority on strengthening the EU through the idea of European sovereignty, effective multilateral cooperation worldwide on issues such as environmental protection, France's role as a balancing force in Europe through dialogue with Russia, support for Africa as well as an active presence in the Pacific & # 8221 ;, Mr. Zarounas pointed out.

With regard to the European Union, President Macron is expected to continue his dynamic effort to strengthen its defense and industrial autonomy in parallel with active participation in NATO, despite the reservations of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

& # 8220; A decisive step in this direction is the Strategic Compass adopted in March. “Throughout the ongoing Conference on the Future of Europe, Macron is preparing to restructure the EU by extending qualified majority voting,” Zarounas said.

This is expected, he added, to enable it to further promote a new enlargement with the gradual inclusion of the countries of the Western Balkans.

& # 8220; At the same time, the Russian invasion of Ukraine dealt a blow to his dialogue with Russia aimed at shaping a new European order in the field of security. This dialogue will continue with the initial goal of a ceasefire in Ukraine, which will then allow the repetition of the effort for a broader agreement on European security issues & # 8221 ;, noted the internationalist.

Asked to mention the importance of the result of the French elections especially for Cyprus and the close cooperation of Nicosia & # 8211; Paris, which has been particularly developed in recent years, in various sectors, with all its extensions in the Cyprus, Eastern Mediterranean, etc., Mr. Zarounas noted that & # 8220; Cyprus has developed for years a close political, energy and defense cooperation with France & # 8221 ;.

& # 8220; This cooperation covers bilateral issues as well as European and regional issues in the Eastern Mediterranean. The re-election of Emmanuel Macron as President of France will allow this cooperation to continue and deepen. At the same time, the new data in Europe, as they have emerged due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, are expected to differentiate the attitude of both the EU and France itself towards Turkey & # 8221 ;, he pointed out.

He said that & # 8220; in particular, the first meetings have already taken place with the aim of reviving the co-production program of the French-Italian anti-aircraft and anti-missile system SAMP-T in Turkey. Similar moves are expected on gas issues to reduce the EU's dependence on Russian gas & # 8221 ;, he said.

& # 8220; return to the issues on the positive EU-Turkey agenda. All this means that France in the next period is not going to support any policy of sanctions against Turkey & # 8221 ;, he added.

On the contrary, he continued, & # 8220; it would be we can see it encouraging the Republic of Cyprus to contribute in a positive way and with concrete steps in this direction & # 8221 ;.

& # 8220; extension of the EU-qualified majority decision-making process will have a negative impact on the Republic of Cyprus's ability to promote its own interests within the Union & # 8221 ;, he concluded.
