The employees of the "Phileleleftheros" newspaper have been on a spontaneous strike since Thursday.
As the President of the Cyprus Editors' Union Giorgos Fragos reported to KYPE, the employees carried out a this move as a reaction to the employer's decision to implement an external circular regarding the status of staff holidays and rest leaves, which, as Mr. Fragos mentioned, constitutes a unilateral alteration of the basic terms of the collective agreement and a violation of the labor code relations, given that there was no prior consultation with the trade unions.
A meeting held by employee representatives with the employer regarding the former's request to withdraw the circular did not result in an agreement, resulting in a spontaneous work stoppage by of the staff and with the support of the Cyprus Editors' Union, OVIEK-SEK and SEVETTYK PEO, pending further developments regarding their request.
Mr. Fragos added on how the trade unions have lodged a complaint with the Mediation Service of the Ministry of Labour.
It is noted that recently disputes had arisen between the employer and the employees of the newspaper due to dismissals of press officers.
