Dangerous chemicals in toys available on the Cypriot market

As part of the application of the Chemical Substances Legislation, the Department of Labor Inspection proceeded with a campaign to control productsmade of plastic available on the Cypriot market. During the campaign, 8 toy samples were taken to check their content of phthalates.
Phthalates are substances classified as toxic to reproduction and included in the restrictions of the Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, products containing specific phthalates in concentrations greater than 0.1% by weight in plasticized material must not be placed on the market.
After laboratory analysis of the samples carried out by the State General Chemistry, in 3 of the 8 samples phthalate esters were detected in concentrations higher than those specified in the legislation. The non-compliant products are shown in the Table below.
Also, in 2 of the 8 samples, Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs), substances which are characterized as Persistent Organic Pollutants, were detected. These substances may not be contained in consumer products in concentrations greater than 0.15% by mass of material.
