Arnold’s Pump Club is a daily podcast from Austrian-American actor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, film producer, former athlete and former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in which he shares tips for a healthier life. One of the 5-minute briefings was about the dangers of microplastics hidden in bottled water.
After stressing the importance of hydration for the body and keeping in shape, Arrnie, according to essentiallysports, pointed out the importance of using plastic bottles. The actor said that plastic bottles have a lot of microplastics (nanoplastics) which are now everywhere and can migrate into the water we drink. However, he said, there is no cause for concern but caution is needed as "it is not about avoiding them completely (as that is probably impossible), but you can limit overall exposure.”
According to research there are more nanoplastics in the plastic bottles manufactured today and the smaller the particles the more dangerous they can be. There is also a possibility of a link between nanoplastics and high blood pressure or diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Schwarzenegger suggested that his listeners limit the water they drink from plastic bottles and use glass or stainless steel bottles instead. He also suggested installing filters in household taps.
It is recalled that recent research showed that 1 liter of bottled water contained approximately 240,000 detectable plastic fragments that have significant effects on human health. These are nanoplastics, so tiny that they can pass through the intestines and lungs directly into the bloodstream and then into organs such as the heart and brain. They can pass through the placenta and even into the bodies of fetuses. Worryingly, the seven types of plastics the researchers looked for accounted for only 10% of all the nanoparticles they found in the samples, with the rest being unknown. If they are all nanoplastics, this means that their number could be tens of millions per liter.
