A wave of reactions was caused by the conviction of an 82-year-old man from Limassol who last summer shot with a shotgun and injured a thief who entered his home.
As informed by Cyprus Times after prison sentence of 2.5 years imposed by the court yesterday and the reactions that followed, the Presidential Office is in consultation with the Legal Service in order to grant a presidential pardon on the basis of and related legislation that gives such opportunity for the President.

Case history
Referring to criminal behavior and events that “in no way justified the use of violence, especially of this extent”, the Criminal Court that met in Limassol on Wednesday, imposed a prison sentence of 2.5 years on the 82-year-old who last summer shot with shotgun and wounded the 67-year-old thief who entered his house located in Alassa, Limassol District, to steal electricity cables.
The Criminal Court rejected a request for suspension of the sentence and sentenced the elderly man to 2.5 years for the charge of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and a sentence of one year for the offense of carrying and using a firearm. The sentences are concurrent.
“For the benefit of the accused, we take into account his admission in Court, which we consider to be immediate, since after the addition of the charge of causing grievous bodily harm, he immediately made an admission” is stated among others in the decision of the Court.
