The interest is focused on the behind-the-scenes ferment at the political level in order to preserve the workers' peace in the banks, after the announcement of the 24-hour strike of ETYK in Elliniki on May 31st. Yesterday, the president of DISY and candidate for the presidency of the Republic, Averof Neophytou, announced discreet moves and communications with both banks and bank employees, in an effort to preserve labor peace in the banking sector, in view of the strike.
At the same time, Mr. Neophytou said that he respects the labor institutions and the right of any organization to make decisions, adding that “at the same time I want to reiterate that banks are not yet a business and especially the banks in Cyprus why were they kept, some of them not all unfortunately, because sacrifices were made by depositors, by holders of securities, by shareholders, by all the Cypriot taxpayers “. Saying that every organization has social responsibility, the president of DISY concluded by pointing out that “organizations have much more social responsibility, such as banks, which without the support of those I mentioned above could not be in the situation they are in today. This should not be ignored. “

The decision of the trade union side to go on strike torpedoed the dialogue that was scheduled to resume on Friday on the initiative of the Minister of Transport Giannis Karousou, who also acts as Minister of Labor. The minister appeared yesterday strongly annoyed, criticizing ETYK because he decided to go on strike, at a time when there was an arranged meeting with him. He also criticized ETYK because, as he said, the union did not show respect for the state of health of the Minister of Labor, who handled the whole issue. “They did not even have to meet on this issue while a meeting with me had been arranged. Instead of attending the meeting, they decided to go on strike. It is in the hands of ETYK, the minister stressed, if he wants to cancel the strike and attend a meeting. But he warned that no meeting would take place under the threat of a strike. Asked about this, Mr. Karousos said that the meeting with Elliniki will take place as planned.
