The managing company of the port of Larnaca is speaking out about the chain-related consequences on the supply chain and the wider economy from a possible closure of the port of Larnaca, calling on the authorities to proceed immediately with the regulation of strikes or mobilizations in essential services .

On the occasion of yesterday's publication of the Phileleftheros newspaper, the Kition Ocean Holdings company responds to the accusations of boat owners regarding the increase in berthing fees and the delay in the start of the projects.

According to the announcement, “with inflation and rising prices, the company proceeded with the minimal increase in berthing fees, keeping the berthing option affordable for boat owners.” He gives as an example that “an owner of a 12 meter boat has been 'burdened' an increase of 38.81 euros per month with the total cost for safe mooring, guarding and 24-hour service totaling 2,329 euros per year”. As a company and based on the agreement we have signed with the government, he continues, “we are obliged to maintain/rehabilitate the preserved wharf. The wooden pier is currently dangerous for public use and until it is fully maintained, it may have to be closed completely at some stage, for safety reasons.

He explains that “at the start of the project we faced various difficulties, as the services involved make us accountable for additional studies and conditions to proceed. The two months of delay for which Kition Ocean Holdings is accused, is due to the fact that competent departments required a static strength study, but also an environmental study for some grass found on the dock and further investigation as to whether it belongs to some kind of endangered plant.”

In addition, he notes that “bearing additional costs and at our own risk and responsibility, we have decided to maintain the pier in sections, always leaving a section of it open, providing safe access to the public and tourists, in order to serve professional boaters as best as possible” . “The company's decision was announced very early on to the coastguards and everyone was on board with it,” he adds.

Among other things, it states that “at our last meeting with the Pancypriot Coasters' Association, we had offered a discount price of three months, with the condition of extending it, which would be jointly decided at a later stage”.

The company warns “of knock-on effects in the supply chain and the wider economy if a small portion of protesters go ahead with closing the port as announced”. It calls on “the government, the relevant Ministries of Transport and Shipping, the Municipality of Larnaca, the Parliament and the organizations KEBE – OEB, to immediately proceed with the regulation of strikes or mobilizations in essential services, so that we can continue development without further delays and each investor to become a ballast for a section of citizens who protest with every change, because interests are affected”.

Kition Ocean Holdings states that “it is at the disposal of all entities, so that we can find solutions where and where problems arise. But they must decide if they wish to implement the grand project, which will be enjoyed by all without exception”.
