Possibility of shutdown of the occupied port of Famagusta due to costs

The operation of the occupied port of Famagusta may be interrupted, as the cost of upgrading it amounts to 200 million euros, said the “Minister of Public Works and Transport”, Erhan Arikli.

As reported by the Press and Information Office, “Dialog” writes that Mr. Arikli, during the discussions on the budget of the “Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works”, mentioned that the port of occupied Famagusta it will gradually fall into an unusable state. This may happen in the next two years.

Stressing the need to make efforts to find a solution to the issue of the port of occupied Famagusta, Mr. Arikli argued that European Union (EU) officials were warning 20 years ago for evolution. He also claimed that in an EU report, there was talk of the repair cost amounting to 200 million euros.

On the same issue, the owner of the Ozkirac Lifting-Shipping company, Jiltan Ozkirac, said that the situation in the port is miserable and that its operation may stop for a period of up to two years. He emphasizes that the problems can only be solved with a correct offer.
