In recent days, there has been a more intense background to the presidential election, which in the past, schematically, seemed completely outside the framework of a peculiar dialogue between the parties. It concerned or even concerns the effort made by the president of DIPA, Marios Karoyan, who appears dynamically, without of course knowing the level of realism of his proposal, for the formation of a wider cooperation of the center-right forces. An alliance, which will be represented but will also support a single candidate.

In the past few days, the initiator of the proposal claimed that the processes are constantly evolving but are also the heart of discussions and reflection in the parties of the so-called central space, while the reflection touches the Democratic Alarm itself. It should be noted that the initiatives of the president of DIPA, in the previous months, concerned the need for a broad cooperation of the political forces, on the basis and logic of the forces participating in the National Council. Mario Karoyan's argument was reinforced by the wider developments with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the international climate that has been created, the new balances that are being formed, but also the expansion of the problems in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the possibilities to deal with the side effects. from an economic crisis. The Caroyan initiative did not seem to be accepted, since the two major parties initially realized that it was impossible to do so.

Last week, Marios Karoyan took care to announce to the Media, not only in the background but also with statements, that he is in constant contact with the president of DISY and presidential candidate Averof Neophytou and the presidents of DIKO and EDEK , but also with the Ecologists, in order to agree on the framework for the creation of a government of wider acceptance.

has been widely accepted, since AKEL has chosen a candidate, whom it will support by going through the internal party procedures.

Realistic proposal?

Marios Karoyan insists that his proposal to discuss the possibility of wider acceptance cooperation is not a figment of the imagination or the result of ungrounded and out-of-place “ambition”.

first contacts.

• Seek or detect if consensus is possible.

• The precondition for the proposal to be successful is that no party leader is a candidate and therefore not even Averof Neophytou, the only one of the leaders who is running in the 2023 elections, “because then we will not talk about a government of wider acceptance”. >

However, according to party sources, the proposal aimed at creating a government of wider acceptance has an obvious difficulty. Even if the parties in question have the flexibility, each for their own understandable reasons, to accept the rationale for this effort, the predominant one is to agree on a personality who is able to achieve the goal of coexistence of different forces. At the same time, it is stated through the report that, despite the mood for dialogue of the parties, each leadership behaves having as a front the coverage of its own small or big impasses, but also its own needs, even its willingness to gain time before a not very temperate climate imposed by existing data. The parties, mainly of the Center, try with their nails and teeth not to be dragged into solutions that they do not want, but the realities may force them to do so. The measurement of the possibilities for wider cooperation can be captured with realism, if that common acceptance candidacy for the parties in question is found. It is also noted that in the discussions in the party rooms the names of personalities who could lead such an alliance were put on the table.

DIKO's reaction

The discussion is real for such a scenario, they claim in DIKO, but it should develop, as noted by sources in the party, “on the basis of a specific framework”. Such a discussion, they note, concerns in fact the parties of the central space, since they are the only ones who have not yet decided to support a specific candidate. Their leaders have not yet received the green light for such a thing. In the logic of DIKO executives, such a cooperation of the Center parties can have a candidate and he is the leader of the largest party, namely Nikolas Papadopoulos. They even went one step further. From the moment when DISY now has two candidates, the president of DIKO “could be the candidate of the wider Center-Right. Such a proposal, they argue, “seems like a normal development and those who have such proposals should put them on the table with realism.”

In front of a management

On the other hand, in DIKO they continue to leak that the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis has a significant lead in the party. The bodies have not yet been led to a final decision in support of the former minister, but apart from the dramatic possibility, they have no other options. It is noted, however, that one of the main concerns of the DIKO leadership today is the form that the political management of the decision for Christodoulidis will take, the only way out of the party at the moment.

However, as it is informed “P”, other views seem to be circulating within the executives of the party's executive office. Although they represent a minority current in the body, they are skeptical about the case of Nikos Christodoulidis, mainly from his expressed positions, both for his party affiliation and for the almost absolute degree of defense of the policies of the Anastasiadis governments. >

Despite the decision-making process, it is clear that:

• The party does not want to send a message to its members and friends that it is in a “political hostage” that leads to full support for Christodoulidis. p>

• In DIKO they are afraid of the shadow of a political inconsistency, in which they will be at the base of their policy in recent years, since it is clear that Nikos Christodoulidis is trying to appear as a de facto candidate of the ruling party, but mainly of government policy practice which he is not willing to criticize, being himself a member of the government for nine years.

As “P” understands, the staff of Nikos Christodoulidis declares ignorance of any moves or decisions reiterate that the independent candidate will not follow the logic of previous forms of cooperation with alliances and surrender, which, as claimed, will create inconsistency “in the profile of a cross-party candidate”.
