Presidential Meeting on Immigrants - France needs help

philenews / ΚΥΠΕ

A meeting next week under the President of the Republic on the burning issue of immigration, announced the Minister of Interior Nikos Nouris. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that in yesterday's meeting with his French counterpart, who was in Cyprus for a one-day visit, they discussed the issue in view of the assumption of the EU Presidency by France for the next six months. He explained that the physiognomy of migration flows has changed significantly in the last year, with the vast majority coming from sub-Saharan Africa. “And because it is well known that most of these countries were French-speaking colonies, I have asked the French Minister of the Interior, and he agreed, to assist the Republic of Cyprus with assistance, in order to open a dialogue with these countries,” he added.

“There is a serious deterioration in the flows through the green line in the last two months”, Mr. Nouris repeated in his statements after the inauguration of the temporary privately owned house of the Community Council of Asomatos and the Refugee Association “Union of Asomatos Youth” , according to an announcement transmitted by the GTP.

It is for this reason, he added, that next week we will have the opportunity in a wide-ranging meeting with the President of the Republic, the Ministry of Interior to present his thoughts, views and of course his suggestions regarding the management of immigration.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that in yesterday's meeting with his French counterpart, who was in Cyprus for a one-day visit, they discussed the issue in view of the assumption of the EU Presidency by France for the next six months.

He explained, he said, to the French Minister of Interior that “apart from the many and well-known problems that our country is facing, there is an additional problem for which I have submitted a request to the French side”.

Mr. Nouris explained that the physiognomy of migration flows has changed significantly in the last year, with the vast majority coming from sub-Saharan Africa.

“And because it is well known that most of these countries were French-speaking colonies, I have asked the French Minister of the Interior, and he agreed, to assist the Republic of Cyprus with assistance, in order to open a dialogue with these countries,” he added. The aim, he said, is to implement voluntary returns of third-country nationals from those countries whose applications have been rejected.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that a meeting is expected in December in Paris to discuss this issue and other issues related to immigration.

At the table and the request for a fire base in Cyprus

At the same time, Mr. Nouris pointed out that during yesterday's meeting the issue of civil protection was also discussed.

“I have reaffirmed the interest of the Republic of Cyprus to establish an air base in Cyprus, where aircraft of various types for firefighting will be stationed, in order to become even more efficient, both in terms of firefighting in our country, but also assistance and assistance to neighboring countries, “he said.

Heavy load on TAMP

Asked to comment on problems faced by the Department of Population and Immigration Records (TAMP) and if there is a possibility of modernization, the Minister said that “it is a fact that there are problems in the TAMP”.

He explained that this is also due to the heavy workload that the Department has been facing lately. Since 2015, 250,000 third-country nationals and community members have been registered in the Population and Immigration Archive of the Republic, he noted.

The Ministry of Interior, he said, “is cooperating, especially with the Ministry of Innovation, in the computerization and streamlining of specific processes”.

Steps have been taken, he said. “But we need to do even more just to be effective,” he said, and to make quick decisions that will facilitate both the citizens and, of course, the Republic, especially on the issue of immigration.
