His first speech as Prince of Wales was given by King Charles' eldest son, Prince William. More specifically, William spoke at the world conference “United for Wildlife” which he founded within the framework of the Royal Foundation in 2014, about animals that are under threat and extinction. In his speech, he did not fail to make references both to his beloved grandmother who passed away on September 8, but also to Philip.
Prince William said: “Our natural world is one of our greatest assets. It's a lesson I learned at a young age, from my father and grandfather, both dedicated naturalists, but also from my much-missed grandmother who was so interested in nature.
In times of loss, it is comforting to honor those we miss through the work we do. I feel good about the progress we are making to end the illegal wildlife trade. The illegal wildlife trade is a crime that robs us of our most precious natural resources, funds organized crime and whose harms are often directly felt by the most vulnerable communities. There are still too many criminals who believe they can act with impunity, too many lives being destroyed and too many species on the brink of extinction because of this heinous crime.”
The Prince of Wales concludes: “We have decided to ensure that those involved in wildlife crime face an international response as strong and coordinated as any other serious and organized crime. To bring their nefarious businesses out of the shadows and ensure communities are equipped, empowered and supported to protect themselves and their natural world.”
