A five-year program with a total cost of about € 100 million for air conditioning in schools, prepared by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, states the KYPE the political head of the Ministry, Prodromos Prodromou.

Asked what the Ministry of Education intends to do on the issue of air conditioning in schools and whether it intends to proceed with the installation of air conditioning in schools, Mr. Prodromou said that as announced in September 2021, the policy position was that there would be planning to install air conditioning in schools.

“This policy proposal was also made by the President of DISY, Averof Neophytou. There is a scientific study team at the Ministry, in collaboration with ETEK and the University of Cyprus. A plan is being made for the conversion of the school buildings, with interventions that will create a suitable bioclimatic environment and the corresponding thermal comfort “, he added.

At the same time, Mr. Prodromou continued, it is evolving and the PEDIA pilot project, in collaboration with the Energy Office – with European funding for research and at the expense of the Ministry of Education – for the conversion of 25 schools into almost zero energy buildings, including the creation of thermal comfort conditions.

“The 25 schools have been selected from among 100. The plan may then be extended to others,” he said. He also said that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, however, has also proceeded with a study for the installation of air conditioning, in a plan that includes all schools.

“Based on the study that was done and after consultations with the Ministry Finance, a proposal will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval and the project will be included in the next medium-term budget plans. “This design will be announced within the next week,” he added.

“The costs mainly concern the upgrade of the electrical installations of the schools (€ 70 million). “Gradual implementation with a five-year plan”, concluded the Minister of Education.
