Yesterday, a bill was discussed in the Finance Committee by Christiana Erotokritou for the extension of the law on overdue tax debts until the end of the year. With the proposal, the non-payment of installments to expel someone from the plan is increased from five to ten. A representative of the Tax Department disagreed, arguing that in case a new extension is given, the law will be violated. He also said that the department already has a problem with arrears, noting that by 2015 the unpaid taxes reach € 2 billion. According to him, the law is not fair to consistent taxpayers, as interest and charges are levied on those who did not pay normally. He also noted that many taxpayers do not pay their debts, expecting a new legislation. However, he agreed to increase the installments from 5 to ten, which will help debtors affected by the pandemic. A spokesman for the Ministry of Finance noted that a new extension would constitute unequal treatment for consistent taxpayers.
