The President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, referred to his Initiative for regional action of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East to deal with the consequences of Climate Change, who participated in a theme of the “One Ocean” Summit held in Brest, France.

In his speech on “Tackling Climate Change with a Focus on Green Shipping”, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that Cyprus has joined the Coalition for Nature and the Peoples, which is co-chaired by France and Costa Rica. , aiming to address the huge economic and geopolitical consequences of climate change, noting at the same time that Cyprus, as a leading shipping country, considers it imperative to accelerate the transition of shipping to a low-emission industry.

He added that at national level, the Cypriot Government has already diversified its long-term shipping strategy under the title “SEA Change 2030”, noting that the main objectives are the proper management of the high seas and oceans as well as the environment.

He also stressed that Cyprus and the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are in the same situation regarding the consequences of climate change, having particular sensitivity in terms of its effects.

“Thus, at the regional level, there is the ongoing initiative of Cyprus to coordinate actions for climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. “This project aims to encourage and provide incentives to the countries of our region to prepare their own Regional Action Plan, based on their own specifics,” said President Anastasiadis.

He added that “as an active member of the International Maritime Organization, Cyprus will work to ensure that shipping has a significant contribution to the protection of the oceans and the reduction of the adverse effects of climate change. To this end, we will continue to focus on bridging initiatives through the promotion of regional cooperation “.

Finally, he stated that both he and the Cypriot Government are convinced that the international community must show a real understanding of the priorities of the various countries and their diversity.
