The Strategy was developed in collaboration with the European Network IMPEL and with the provision of technical assistance by the Structural Reform Support Service of the European Commission.

The Strategy, it adds, includes the recording of the sources and types of municipal waste, the obligations and objectives deriving from the European Waste Directives, the current situation in relation to waste management in Cyprus, including the existing waste management infrastructure and forecasts for waste generation and management. At the same time, the measures and actions for the next six years are defined.

The measures of the Strategy, it is noted, are based on the need to accelerate the fulfillment of the obligations arising from the Directives and on the full utilization and strengthening of the existing waste management infrastructure. At the same time, the planned developments for new services and infrastructures for source sorting and separate collection are taken into account, which will reduce the production of mixed waste, according to the Department of Environment.
The forthcoming implementation of “Pay as I Fly” systems in all local authorities emphasizes the need to increase separate collection, preparation for reuse and recycling, as well as the need to strengthen the infrastructure for the management of separately selected waste.
According to the Department of Environment, “the measures will strengthen the existing network and create new waste management infrastructure, while reducing municipal waste generated and reused.”
It also states, “Production liability systems will be improved. Financial resources, tools, training and awareness raising will be included. The collection of waste management data and the coordination of the Central Government and the Local Government will be improved “.
