Public Consultation for the draft Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2021 – 2027 starts the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment from January 31, 2022 until March 1, 2022.

In an announcement, the Department of Environment notes that it has prepared the new Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2021-2027, to determine the framework of actions and measures, in the context of achieving the goals adopted for the transition to the circular economy.

The Strategy was developed in collaboration with the European Network IMPEL and with the provision of technical assistance by the Structural Reform Support Service of the European Commission.

It is stated that in formulating the new Strategy, the following principles of compliance with the obligations arising from the European directives on waste management and achieving the objectives of reuse, recycling and reduction of landfill, the full utilization of the existing waste management infrastructure have been taken into account. , the implementation of the waste management hierarchy and the adoption of best and economically viable practices, according to the announcement.

The Strategy, it adds, includes the recording of the sources and types of municipal waste, the obligations and objectives deriving from the European Waste Directives, the current situation in relation to waste management in Cyprus, including the existing waste management infrastructure and forecasts for waste generation and management. At the same time, the measures and actions for the next six years are defined.

“The aim is to ensure sufficient capacity for the proper treatment of mixed waste,” it said.

The measures of the Strategy, it is noted, are based on the need to accelerate the fulfillment of the obligations arising from the Directives and on the full utilization and strengthening of the existing waste management infrastructure. At the same time, the planned developments for new services and infrastructures for source sorting and separate collection are taken into account, which will reduce the production of mixed waste, according to the Department of Environment.

The forthcoming implementation of “Pay as I Fly” systems in all local authorities emphasizes the need to increase separate collection, preparation for reuse and recycling, as well as the need to strengthen the infrastructure for the management of separately selected waste.

According to the Department of Environment, “the measures will strengthen the existing network and create new waste management infrastructure, while reducing municipal waste generated and reused.”

It also states, “Production liability systems will be improved. Financial resources, tools, training and awareness raising will be included. The collection of waste management data and the coordination of the Central Government and the Local Government will be improved “.

It is noted that the draft of the Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2021 – 2027 is posted on the website of the Department of Environment.
