A public dialogue with agencies, citizens and active citizens, in order to enrich the pool of thoughts, opinions and suggestions regarding the utilization of the site of the Old Metaxourgiou, former KEN Paphos, was launched by the Geroskipou Municipal Council, according to Mayor Kyriakos Hatzivasilis.
In his statements to the KYPE, Mr. Chatzivasilis stated that it is a fact that several interesting suggestions and opinions have been heard at this particular event which the Geroskipou municipal council will take seriously, so that the most correct decision can be made as far as possible concerns the future of the specific building.
As Mr. Hatzivasilis mentioned, in general it should be taken into account that everyone focused on the historicity and value of the specific space and also on the need for a sustainable utilization.
With this event, a public dialogue was officially launched. for the discussion of ways to utilize the space, in which the communities that will make up the Municipality of Eastern Paphos in the future can also participate, as mentioned.
Besides, in a statement, Nikos Palios, Cultural Affairs Officer & of Public Relations of the Municipality of Geroskipou, stated that factors that must be taken into account before finalizing the design of the above area are the urban planning status.
The full utilization and exploitation of the urban planning conditions for building and coverage that apply to the block, besides being economically unfeasible, it will be disastrous (environmentally, culturally and socially).
The authenticity of Metaxourgeio as an industrial site has been significantly reduced, due to the loss of its equipment, but also the destruction/removal of its architectural parts (such as the huge chimney, which was a trademark of the factory), he says. This fact, of course, significantly affects the formulation of the proposal for use, he notes.
Also, he continued, local needs and the financial capabilities of the Municipality must be taken into account.
Within the next period, the Cultural Service of the Municipality of Geroskipou will submit to the Municipal Council a specific proposal (as a basis for discussion), which will provide for the utilization, in a sustainable way, of the building stock of the Old Metaxourgeio (mixed-use complex).
The proposal will also include the activation of the outdoor public space, with the aim of upgrading the quality of life in Geroskipou. Additionally, the outdoor space will be an organic part of the building complex, while, with the removal of the fences, it will also connect the space with the wider area and Geroskipou Square.
