Reactions to the Archbishop's statement - "Silence is an element of authoritarianism"

The prohibition of expression and judgment, silencing, is an element of authoritarianism and absolutism, which on a spiritual level leads to regression and obscurantism, says Professor Christos Oikonomou, President of the Theology Department of the University of Nicosia, commenting on the statement of the elected Archbishop, Georgiou: … Stop those who roam from media to media, exposing the Church and themselves».

In his written statement, Mr. Economou considers this statement "misguided and provocative" and it is hoped that “it is not an indication of his intentions to move in the direction of prohibitions.” "I hope that the elected Archbishop of Cyprus realizes the legal and normative failures of the Charter of the Church of Cyprus, which led to his election, contrary to popular vote and conscience of the Church”, he says.

It is hoped, he continues, that the Archbishop of Cyprus understands the custom established by the elections of Kyrenia, Chrysostom and Kitio, Nektarios, as well as the dangers caused to the unity of the Church of Cyprus by the division of this custom, of the coming together of People and Synod, as he states.

"I hope that the awareness and understanding of all of the above will help his subsequent words and actions".

However, if, as Professor Oikonomou states, para& #39; all his hopes, the first declaration in time "of the one voted only by a part of the Synod and not by the majority of the Clergy and People, Archbishop of Cyprus", constitutes a peculiar silence, then – continues – "as a free member of the Church of Cyprus and a theological academic, it is for me a matter of personal and academic responsibility to declare that I will continue to express my scientific, theological, canonical and ecclesiological opinion freely and unbounded, whether orally or in writing".
