Event dedicated to the newly admitted students of the postgraduate programs for the academic year 2023-2024, organized by the Institute of Neurology & of Cyprus Genetics (ING). Students from Cyprus, Greece, Oman, Palestine, Egypt, India, Russia, Lithuania and England received detailed information on all the topics that concern them and were given a tour of the ING laboratory facilities.
In his address, the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of the Institute of Neurology & of Cyprus Genetics, Professor Leonidas Phylaktos, welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of the students' work at the Institute, as the results of their own theses can have a direct impact on patients and society. Professor Phylaktos referred to the long history of the Institute and its areas of specialization as well as services, which in our country are offered exclusively by ING.
The Dean, Professor Kyproula Christodoulou, in her greeting encouraged the young scientists should not hesitate to ask questions and learn from the highly specialized staff of the Institute, where services, research and education coexist.
Education based on areas of expertise
ING's postgraduate programs are offered at Master's (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) level in Medical Genetics, Molecular Medicine and Neuroscience. Programs in Biomedical Research are also offered at Master's level, as well as the new program in the emerging field of Biotechnology.
ING's education model is innovative for Cypriot data, since research, diagnostic and clinical services coexist under the same roof together with education. Students move in a dynamic work environment and have the opportunity to collaborate with the different departments of ING and prepare their research theses on a wide range of topics, gaining valuable experience in real laboratory conditions. The students join the ING research groups and at the same time attend lectures of common core courses and elective courses. The recent collaboration of the Institute, within the framework of the Biotechnology programme, with local academic and research institutions and with the local industry in the fields of winemaking, dairying and baking, enhances the possibility that ING students have for specialized training and experience in real-world working conditions.
ING's more than thirty years of experience as an employer and training provider plays a decisive role in recognizing the elements required by today's work environment and labor market. All courses are designed with specific learning and work objectives in mind. Additionally, during the academic year, students have the opportunity to attend a series of skills enrichment seminars such as bioinformatics, bioethics, biostatistics, scientific writing, and others. Students gain daily the valuable skills of teamwork and professionalism, in the correct conduct of laboratory work and experience in winning research funds.
ING's postgraduate programs are suitable for graduates of medicine, biology, genetics, neuroscience, biomedicine, chemistry, psychology and other related fields, who wish to progress to a Master's or Doctorate level. The language of instruction is English. Scholarships are offered in the Master's and PhD programs. Applications for the next academic year 2024-2025 will be accepted from January 2024.
