About three thousand people were carried by the Rhapsody of the Seas cruise ship of the Royal Caribbean group, which docked on Thursday morning in the Ayia Napa marina.

The cruise ship that makes cruises in the Mediterranean, arrived at 7.30 in the morning and the disembarkation of the passengers immediately began, who, after passing the necessary checks, then boarded buses and were taken to Ayia Napa, Protaras, Larnaca and the botanical garden of Avgorou, while some remained in the port of Agia Napa.

It is noted that the ship is 297 meters long with 12 decks and carried 2,100 passengers and 800 personnel.

At the Agia Napa marina, the reception ceremony was held by the Director of the Marina, Kostas Fitiris, the Mayor of Ayia Napa Christos Zannettos and officials of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

During the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was awarded to the crew officers, while gifts were given by the Municipality of Ayia Napa. Gifts were also given from the Ayia Napa marina, including olive oil, which was produced from the olive trees planted in the area.

Due to the long session of the Council of Ministers in Nicosia, no the Deputy Ministers of Shipping and Tourism managed to attend the welcoming ceremony of the cruise ship, with the latter arriving at the marina later in the afternoon.

In his statements, Kostas Koumis said that “we welcome the arrival at the Ayia Napa marina of an admittedly large boat at the Ayia Napa marina. It is the second cruise ship to arrive this year and three more are expected” he said and noted that “we consider it extremely important that vessels of this capacity, of three thousand seats, now have the opportunity to arrive at really high-quality infrastructure such as the Ayia Napa marina” .

He added that “maritime tourism is a sector, a special form of tourism that interests us and is increasing and we will continue our efforts for even better results”.

In his statements Gary Waugh, the ship's senior officer expressed “gratitude on behalf of the crew for the hospitality offered by the marina team, the Mayor of Ayia Napa and other officials. It is a great experience for someone to come to Ayia Napa,” he said.

He added that “this is the second time we have visited the marina, which is an excellent project. We wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to coming back,” he said, expressing his appreciation for another cruise ship visit in October.

For his part, Costas Fitiris, Director of the Ayia Napa marina, expressed satisfaction with the cruise ship's arrival back in Cyprus and noted that “it is a reward for the efforts made collectively by the marina, the Municipality of Ayia Napa and by government agencies to cruise ships are coming to the free area of Famagusta and specifically to the marina of Ayia Napa”.

We hope, he continued, “that the program will continue with an increased number of cruise ships for this year as well as next year. It is a huge program that will help the region to remove the seasonality that plagues the free region of Famagusta”.

Answering a question as to whether the Ayia Napa marina has taken actions with the Deputy Ministries of Tourism and Shipping to increase the arrival of cruise ships in the area, Mr. Fitiris said that “we are working with the two specific Deputy Ministries, we will participate in exhibitions to convince the cruise ship companies to come to the marina and of course to visit the entire free province so that we can mainly deal with the seasonality that plagues the region”.

Asked to comment on the olive oil that was offered as a gift to the officers of the cruise ship, Kostas Fitiris said that “I can say the olive is our national tree and we have planted several olive trees in the marina. This year we harvested olives and made oil which we give to our guests”.

Besides, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou, welcomed the cruise ship, its crew and passengers to the Ayia Napa marina. It is very important for us that today around 3 thousand people have disembarked and will tour Ayia Napa and other nearby destinations”.

We are happy, he continued, “because this company is visiting Ayia Napa for the second time. I want to thank the cruise ship and also the representatives of the company who make every effort to get these results” he said and expressed the certainty that “there will be visits to the Ayia Napa marina by other cruise ships as well”.

Mr. Zannettu thanked everyone “who are making efforts to get these results with the arrival of cruise ships in the area. The State and the Government must see these efforts collectively and support them, because it is an area that needs to be developed. To stop having brakes and trivial demands and to support a new sector that supports the tourism industry, which concerns a different part and also concerns markets that we probably don't have in Cyprus”.
