Russia: 41 firefighters injured in fire caused by Ukrainian drones

More than 40 Russian firefighters were injured trying to put out the fire that broke out in a warehouse of fuel after a Ukrainian drone attack in the southwestern Russian city of Proletarsk, local authorities announced today.

A state of emergency was declared in the city of Rostov Oblast, where a fire continued to engulf an industrial facility. for the second day in a row, the administration of the Proletarsk region had stated a little earlier.

"Currently, 41 firefighters have been examined in the central hospital of the region," regional governor Vasily Golubev said on Telegram.

"Eighteen of them had to be hospitalized, of which five are hospitalized. in the intensive care unit”, he added.

Additional resources have been dispatched to bring the fire under control and while there are “very difficult conditions due to high temperatures,” the governor said earlier.

Yesterday, the governor said the fire was caused by falling debris. after "the repulsion by air defense forces of an attack by drones" and that no one had been injured.

For its part, a source in the ranks of the Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR) confirmed to AFP on Sunday that drones had attacked the Kavkaz fuel and petroleum products storage facility, located in Proletarsk.

According to this source, this facility supplied the Russian “military-industrial complex”.

A city of almost 20,000 inhabitants, Proletark is located about 200 km from the Ukrainian border and about 350 km from the Kiev-held war zones on the front line in eastern Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the conflict in 2022, Kiev has repeatedly targeted oil and gas facilities in Russia, some located hundreds of kilometers from its border of Ukraine, in the context of what Kiev described as "fair" in retaliation for attacks on its energy infrastructure.

The drone strikes come as Ukraine has for nearly two weeks launched an unprecedented cross-border offensive into Russia's Kursk region, of which it says it controls more from 80 locations.
