Russia's position on Cyprus is stable – It does not discuss direct flights to occupied territories – Russo-Cypriot relations have suffered “recklessly and unjustifiably serious damage”

Russia stands against the militarization of the Eastern Mediterranean and in favor of a sustainable and a just solution of the Cyprus issue, as well as in favor of the agreements, which do not allow any air connection with the occupied territories, said the competent director of the 4th European Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yury Philipson to the Russian news agency “RIA-Novosti”. p>

The high-ranking diplomat also referred to Russian-Cypriot relations, stating that in recent years Russian-Cypriot relations, including their economic part, have suffered “recklessly and unfoundedly serious damage”.< /strong>

Questioned about Turkish statements about the possibility of creating a naval base in the occupied territories, the high-ranking Russian diplomat stated that “of course we are following the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean in the most careful way, as it is an important area, among other things from the point of view of vesting security. We are opposed to its militarization and to any actions that lead to an increase in conflict potential”.

He added that “our starting point is the necessity for a comprehensive, sustainable and just solution to the Cyprus problem within the agreed international legal framework, determined by the resolutions of the UN Security Council, taking into account the just interests and concerns of both communities. As a permanent member of the Security Council we seek to contribute to the search for balanced solutions”.

Referring in particular to the regular resumption of the issue ofof direct air flights from the “authorities” of the pseudo-state, G. Philipson noted that “as you know, only Turkey has air connections with the north of Cyprus. In this sense, the situationhasn't changed for a long time, as well as our position on Cypriot affairs. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia remains committed to UN Security Council resolutions, including 541 (of 1983) and 550 (of 1984), as well as the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation of 1944. We see no alternative. solution from relying on international law”.

“We are forced to establish that in recent years Russian-Cypriot relations, including their financial part, have been recklessly and unjustifiably seriously damaged. As a result of the illegal sanctions, bona fide financial entities have suffered and the interests of both Russians and Cypriots have been harmed. Long-standing mutually beneficial ties were either destroyed or seriously damaged,” said the Russian diplomat in charge of relations with SE Europe.

He noted that “today almost all unfriendly states are putting pressure on Russian capital under the most diverse invented pretexts,” as, he argued, “unjustified, often absurd demands are made when controlling the normal business activity of a company.” There is discrimination in banking and many other sectors. It is obvious that this line was invented and dictated by Brussels, Washington and London”. strong>, the Russian diplomat claimed that this policy “violates the established principles and rules of the business community, harms the interests of the Western countries themselves and their economic operators and raises reasonable questions, which we raise, among others, in Nicosia” .

“The protection of the rights of Russian citizens and their interests, including financial ones, remains a top priority in our diplomatic work through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Russia in Cyprus”, concluded G. Philipson , who also condemned the “toxic atmosphere” for Russian diplomats in EU countries, which Moscow describes as “unfriendly states” and expressed hope that Belgrade “also on a practical level will honorably toe the line” of not granting weapons “to the Zelensky regime”. Balkans, but also Turkey, as well as that there are references in them to aspects of international law with particular importance for Cyprus and its diplomacy.
