Citizens spotted a flamingo floating dead in Aliki Larnaca on Monday morning 04/01. The Ecologists 'Movement – Citizens' Cooperation was immediately notified about the incident, as stated in its announcement.
On behalf of the Movement, Mr. Nikos Afxentiou went to the spot and in turn informed the Hunting and Fauna Service. The Thera Service rushed to the spot where after a while – due to the inaccessibility of the area – it removed the dead flamingo for inspection and burial.
According to the announcement, a vehicle of the Hunting and Fauna Service is patrolling the area, while the Ecologists' Movement is waiting for the result of the examinations that will show the causes of death of the bird.
As mentioned, this is not the first time that a flamingo death has been recorded in Aliki Larnaca. Years ago, due to the operation of a shooting range on the shores of the Larnaca salt flat, there were mass deaths of flamingos. It turned out that they had been poisoned by the lead contained in the shrapnel from the shooting range.
